Professor Wole Soyinka has called on President Muhammadu Buhari not to create confusion in the minds of Nigerians by still retaining loyalty to the late Sani Abacha.

Soyinka said it is confusing that President Buhari is honouring the late MKO Abiola while also retaining loyalty to one of the ‘worst dictators’ in Nigeria.

Soyinka was refering to a recent comment by Buhari while he was receiving the Buhari support organisation (BSO) in Abuja.

Buhari had praised Abacha for, despite holding a bad image, doing good things for the country.

Buhari said, “And you know more than I do the condition of the roads and some of them were not repaired since PTF days. No matter what opinion you have about Abacha, I agreed to work with him and the PTF road we did from here to Port Harcourt, to Onitsha, to Benin and so on… On top of other things in the institution, education, medical care and so on.”

But while speaking at the conferment ceremony of national honours on the June 12 heroes, Soyinka said that he applauds Buhari for all he has done.

He however urged President Buhari to name Abacha in the “Hall of shame” for all the atrocities he committed while he was the Head of state in Nigeria.

“Don’t confuse Nigerians, don’t honor Abiola in one hand and admire his tormentor in another hand…Stop confusing Nigerians. In one breath you extol Abacha in another breath you honour MKO. How can you extol Abacha who if he were alive today would be in the ICC.”
